The recent failures of KYC-free crypto card programmes followed the same arc. They grew quickly by exploiting gaps in oversight, and when scrutiny arrived, they shut down abruptly. Businesses attempting ordinary transactions were left exposed alongside speculative users.
Who Do You Call When Money Stops?
This is not about bad actors but about structure. Modern treasury functions may involve a dozen banks, multiple processors, and data scattered across ERPs, banking portals, and middleware platforms. Responsibility is fragmented, visibility is partial, and time is lost stitching together answers after problems emerge.
Traditional banking concentrated power and risk, but also responsibility. When something went wrong, there was a clear place to call. Today, when money stops moving, it is unclear whether the issue sits with the processor, sponsor bank, or intermediary. Compliance obligations flow down the chain, while information rarely flows back up.
The Clarity Problem
Adding more rules helps, but does not solve the underlying problem. You cannot manage working capital across dozens of accounts if insight arrives weeks late. AI can help, but only if treated as a tool for clarity rather than speed. Rule-based automation struggles with timing differences, regulatory nuance, and incomplete data.
Finance teams need tools that surface complexity rather than hiding it. Decisions must make sense to the people using them, predictions must be understandable, and people must stay in charge even when machines do the heavy lifting.
Early Action vs. Late Scrambling
The real prize is foresight. It means catching a liquidity squeeze before it turns into a full crisis, or understanding how a delay in one country is going to hit the rest of the business. The ability to do something about it early, instead of scrambling later when everyone’s watching, can be the difference between booming as a business or going bust.
Too many platforms have stumbled at critical moments or shifted rules without notice. Trust will not return through louder promises but through real visibility, where people can understand why decisions are made and controls work in practice when needed.
Why Reliability Beats Speed
Rapid growth in financial services should be treated with caution. When money moves faster than understanding, the moment it stops is the one everyone remembers.
I am cautiously optimistic that the industry is learning that reliability matters more than speed. When complex treasury operations can be managed with full transparency, finance teams can finally trust the systems they rely on.
