Money20/20 was full of talk about AI, digital assets, embedded finance and next-gen payments, but the strongest message was simpler: the winners will be the firms that earn and keep trust.

In this interview, Marlon van der Horst, CEO of Monex in the Netherlands, shares his main takeaways from Money20/20 Europe. He discusses the trends that caught his attention, including AI, digital assets, and cross-border payments, and explains what these developments mean for corporates and treasury teams.

What was your biggest “wow” moment at Money20/20?

My biggest “wow” moment at Money20/20 was seeing how rapidly the financial industry is evolving, while realizing that the fundamentals remain unchanged. There was a lot of discussion around AI, digital assets, embedded finance, and next-generation payments, but the real differentiator continues to be trust.

The firms that will win are not necessarily those with the most innovative technology, but those that can combine innovation, regulation, financial strength, and strong client relationships. That was a powerful reminder of where our industry is heading.

Which fintech or payments trend got people talking the most?

AI dominated many conversations at Money20/20, but not in the way it did a year ago. The discussion has shifted from possibility to execution.

At the same time, there was strong interest in the modernization of cross-border payments and the convergence of traditional finance with digital assets. The common theme across all these trends was clear; clients increasingly expect seamless, real-time, and globally connected financial services.

From a Monex perspective, what was the most interesting takeaway for corporates and treasury teams?

From a Monex perspective, the key takeaway was that treasury is becoming a strategic partner to the business. With ongoing currency volatility and global uncertainty, corporates are focusing more on managing FX risk, improving cash visibility, and optimizing cross-border payments.

The conversation has shifted from simply executing transactions to using treasury as a tool to protect profitability and support growth.
